Every year, my children love to make Salt Dough Ornaments. It’s one of their favorite holiday crafts for kids and one of my favorite Christmas traditions. They always have so much fun rolling the dough, cutting the different shapes with cookie cutters, and painting and decorating the ornaments. We’ve already made six batches of this Salt Dough Ornament Recipe this year!
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups of Flour
- 1 Cup of Salt
- 1 Cup of Warm Water
Supplies:
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters
- Straw
- Cookie Sheet
- Paint, Food Coloring, or Kool-Aid
- Paintbrush
- Ribbon or pipe cleaner
- Mod Podge (optional)
Directions:
- Combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the water and mix all of the ingredients together.
- Knead dough for about 10 minutes or until it is soft.
- Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
- Sprinkle the table (or other hard surface) and rolling pin with flour and roll out the dough until it is 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut out ornaments using cookie cutters.
- Place the ornaments onto a cookie sheet.
- Poke a hole at the top of each ornament using a straw.
- Bake for 4-6 hours at 200 degrees.
- Let the ornaments cool completely.
3 Ways to Paint:
1. Acrylic or Tempra paints- Pour some paint onto a paper plate, give your child a paint brush, and let them be creative.
2. Kool-Aid- Mix 1 packet of Kool-Aid with 1/4 cup of water. The darker color flavors of Kool-Aid (grape, cherry, blue raspberry) work the best.
3. Food coloring- Mix a few drops (4 or 5) of food coloring with 1/4 cup of water. The colors will be duller compared to the paint or Kool-Aid but it still works great as an alternative.
After the paint has dried completely, put a coat of Mod Podge over the ornament. This is optional but it will help protect the ornament and prevent the paint from chipping or cracking.
Cut a ribbon or pipe cleaner that is about 4 inches long and loop it through the hole in the ornament. Tie a knot at the end and it is ready to hang on your tree.
