Playing with play dough is one of my favorite activities for kids. Children can strengthen their hand muscles by rolling and forming the play dough into different shapes and develop fine motor skills by writing on it or cutting it with a pair of safety scissors.
With a young toddler who likes to put everything in his mouth and a preschooler with sensory issues who doesn’t like the smell of the store bought play dough, I like to make my own Kool-Aid Play Dough.
Kool-Aid Play Dough is safe for little children to taste and the Kool-Aid gives it a sweet smell that your kids will love. Kool-Aid Play Dough is so easy to make too. It only requires four ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen.
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups of Baking Soda
- 1 Cup of Cornstarch
- 1 Package of Kool-Aid
- 1 1/2 Cups of Water
Supplies:
- Mixing Bowl
- Mixing Spoon
- Pot
- Stove
- Measuring Cups (Cup and 1/2 Cup)
Directions:
1. Mix the water and Kool-Aid together in a small mixing bowl and set aside. We used Cherry Kool-Aid in this recipe.
2. Combine the baking soda and cornstarch in a small pot.
3. Add the water and Kool-Aid mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well.
4. Cook on low and stir frequently.
5. After the mixture forms into dough, remove the pot from the stove and let it cool.
6. Kneed the dough.
We make this recipe all of the time and have used every flavor of Kool-Aid. Flavors such as Cherry and Grape tend to have a brighter color then the lighter color flavors.
Playing with play dough is one of my favorite activities for kids, because it is not only fun but can also help children develop and practice important developmental skills. Homemade Kool-Aid Play Dough is a great alternative to the store bought kind, because it is gluten-free, safe for young children to put in their mouths, and has a sweet aroma that kids will enjoy.

What I like about this version of Kool-Aid Play Dough is that it is gluten free for those children who have allergies.

This is such a great idea for edible play dough (for gluten sensitive kiddos)! I’m curious to try it just to see how vivid the colors get!
