One of our favorite manipulatives or learning tools to use is animal counters. We have used them for a lot of different learning activities like counting, graphing, and creating patterns. Today, we added our animal counters to a sensory bin to practice sorting, identifying, and classifying by color. My children had so much fun using this Animal Counters Sensory Bin to explore and learn all about colors.
Supplies:
- Plastic Container
- Water Beads, Tissue Paper or other Sensory Bin Filler
- Animal Counters
- Muffin Tin
How To Play:
- Fill a plastic container with water beads, tissue paper, or another sensory bin filler and add the animal counters.
- Children can sort through the sensory bin and pick out all of the animal counters.
- Children can divide the animal counters by color and place each color in a different cup in the muffin tin. You can also use colored cups or silicone baking cups to help children classify the colors.
Extend the Learning:
- After sorting the animal counters by color, count and graph the numbers on a bar graph.
- Sort the animal counters by the animals instead of by color.
- Use the animal counters to create animal and color patterns.
- Name an animal and color and have your child find that counter in the bin.
For our Animal Counters Sensory Bin, we used animal counters but there are a a lot of different types of counters that you can use including teddy bears, dinosaurs, ocean animals, and farm animals.
